Contemporary issues in higher education, such as accessibility, mental health, and diversity, require innovative and responsive strategies. Addressing these challenges involves staying informed about current trends, policies, and student needs. Through continuous learning and collaboration with colleagues, I have developed a nuanced understanding of these issues and effective approaches to address them. For example, I have proposed mental health initiatives and diversity training programs that cater to our evolving student demographic. My growth in this competency is demonstrated by my ability to anticipate emerging issues and proactively develop solutions that enhance the student experience, ensuring that our institution remains adaptable and responsive to the changing landscape of higher education.
My research in this paper on contemporary issues focused on exploring the connection between students’ sense of belonging and their academic outcomes. I investigated how identity factors influence college success or failure and identified potential support programs to aid students from enrollment to graduation. Building on these findings, I recently led a discussion with colleagues about integrating strategies to foster student belonging into their advising roles.
