The histories, values, and philosophies of higher education shape the framework within which student affairs professionals operate. Understanding the evolution of higher education and its foundational principles allows for a deeper appreciation of its current practices and future directions. I have grown in this competency by engaging in extensive readings, participating in discussions on the historical milestones of higher education, and reflecting on the core values that guide our work. This knowledge has empowered me to advocate for policies and practices that honor the legacy of higher education while addressing contemporary challenges. By articulating these elements, I can better explain the rationale behind institutional decisions and foster a sense of continuity and purpose among students and staff, contributing to a cohesive and informed academic community.
Understanding the historical role of women in higher education is crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of the field's histories, values, and philosophies. By examining women's experiences in this paper, I have gained valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that have shaped higher education. Having this knowledge underscores for me the imperative for diversity in higher education, as it allows us to cultivate a rich tapestry of perspectives, fostering holistic development and enabling more effective, well-rounded improvements in our student affairs practice.

DownloadReflecting on my personal and professional philosophies was a valuable experience. This process allowed me to deepen my understanding of my own beliefs and values. Through the research conducted in this paper, I grounded these philosophies in my personal motto, "ASPIRE...PERSPIRE...INSPIRE." Crafting a philosophy statement is essential for developing a strong foundation in higher education's histories, values, and philosophies. It provides a clear framework for understanding one's role within the field and informs future actions.
