Student development and learning theories are essential frameworks in student affairs, aimed at fostering students' intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive growth. These theories provide insights into how students form their identities, build relationships, and develop critical thinking skills. Over time, I have deepened my understanding of these concepts through professional development and hands-on experience. By applying theories such as Perry’s Intellectual and Ethical Development and Kohlberg’s Moral Development, I have tailored my approach to meet the diverse needs of students. For instance, I designed an advising program that challenges my colleagues to focus on providing emotional support and promoting holistic student development. My growth in this competency is reflected in my ability to create environments where students can explore their identities, engage in meaningful dialogue, and enhance their problem-solving abilities, ultimately preparing them for personal and academic success.
This paper provided an opportunity to delve into Perry's Theory of Intellectual and Ethical Development and apply its principles to my current institution. By examining this theory, I developed an advising framework focused on holistic student development. This framework incorporates applicable theories to support advisors in understanding and guiding students through their educational journey. Ultimately, this model aims to enhance student success by equipping advisors with tools to foster intellectual and personal growth.

DownloadThis letter exercise was instrumental in demonstrating the power of theory in driving advocacy efforts. I found the process of applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges incredibly rewarding. Specifically, I successfully employed the theory of ableism to advocate for significant changes to the rehabilitation program at His Majesty's Prison, where I volunteer. This experience highlights the potential of theoretical frameworks to inform and strengthen advocacy initiatives.
